Day 1, Wednesday: The story of your life in 250 words or less (or one paragraph... no one will be counting your words... probably)

Where to begin?!
Well, at the beginning, I suppose.
I was born a poor black child... wait... that's a different story.
Mine is this: I was born with a birth defect: congenital stenosis in my trachea. After some panicking and about 30 surgeries, I recovered fully (yay!). My parents divorced when I was little-little, leaving me with only bits and pieces of memories of my bio-dad. When I was seven, my mom married my step-dad (and for all intents and purposes, my IRL dad), and they’ve been married since. In high school, they, too, started having lots of problems, and things were super-suck for me and my sister for a while (they are better now, tho!). I can’t imagine what that time would have been like if I hadn’t had cheerleading, my friendships, and theater.
With as much ambition for college I could find (most of it
residing in my pinky finger), I went to CSUN for my BA in English. I met Adam
(my husband) during my last semester of college and we fell quickly in love. We
got married ten months after we met, I got into the MA program at CSUN and
started teaching English there, and we began fielding the probes from all the
folks who thought I was pregnant when we got married so quickly. (Yeah, not so much).
After nine (9!! OMG!) years of talking and dreaming about it, Adam and I
finally made the move we’d been planning since our third date at Chili’s:
moving to Hawai’i. We now live here (and pinch ourselves every day), and are
trying our best to figure out which way is up. I hope you’ll keep following
along on our journey!
